Lynn will be honored as “one of the first successful female country music vocalists in the early 1960s, courageously breaking barriers in an industry long dominated by men.”

The award is given to individuals “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” While an official date for the award ceremony hasn’t been set, the recipients will be honored later this year, typicaly

Alongside Lynn, other females honored include Oprah Winfrey, feminist trailblazer Gloria Steinem, and Sally Ride (R.I.P.), the first American female astronaut to travel to space. Bill Clinton is among the males honored, as well as jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Executive Order signed by President John F. Kennedy establishing the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
