‘American Idol’ Reportedly Firing All Four Judges, Including Keith Urban
A new report indicates that after this season of American Idol viewers can expect a clean slate — the show will reportedly let all four judges go, including Keith Urban who was new this first season.
According to The Wrap, the high profile judges that came with sizable salaries, have not given the ratings boost the network was looking for. The network paid big bucks to land Mariah Carey (reportedly $18 million for one season), Nicki Minaj (reportedly $12 million) and Keith Urban (reportedly between $3-5 million), but hasn’t seen a big ratings turn around to justify the high price tags. Ratings are down 22% this season and hit their lowest ratings ever the week of April 29, 2013.
Also reportedly getting the boot is longtime show producer Nigel Lythgoe, who helped launch Idol. The reality singing competition has been steadily bested by newcomer The Voice — which is not only beatingIdol‘s ratings but stole the show’s nomination for Outstanding Reality Competition at the Emmys.
The Wrap says Idol isn’t facing cancelation because it is still a huge revenue earner, bringing in over $800 million in 2012. But the show is going to see a major overhaul. Not just at the judge’s table, but in format.
Further reports indicate the former Idol judge Jennifer Lopez is not under consideration for a return to the judge’s table.
