Hunter Hayes Opens Up On Songwriting, Releases New Single ‘I Want Crazy’

Hunter Hayes is no stranger to writing about his feelings. His GRAMMY-nominated crossover hit single “Wanted” was a love letter to tell a girl how he felt about her.

Now he’s back with “I Want Crazy,” a song he debuted this weekend at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

On the track, Hayes sings, “I don’t want good and I don’t want good enough/I want can’t sleep, can’t breathe without your love . . . I don’t want easy, I want crazy.” sat down with Hayes to discuss his songwriting process and whether he ever holds back on revealing too much for fear the person he’s writing about will find out.

“I’m a big fan of just letting everything out on the table. That’s why I write songs, that’s why I do what I do,” he explained. “I’m a big fan of just saying whatever is on your mind. My filter’s not that great. That’s how I think through everything.”

A big fan of communication, Hayes says this is how he writes his songs.

“I do like to talk about things and figure it out. It helps you think through it. When you hear it back, sometimes it’s not always as good of an idea as it was when you were just thinking it,” he said.

Hayes’ new single “I Want Crazy” is available now on iTunes. The song will also appear on the upcoming deluxe edition of his debut album Hunter Hayes (Encore), which drops June 18.
