“Okay, it’s a funny story about the video,” Kacey Musgraves said with a smile. “We just wanted something to put out on YouTube.”

The country singer told Radio.com that the music video for her first single “Merry Go ‘Round,” off her recent chart-topping album, Same Trailer Different Park, was really just a first draft. Made using stock footage and an iPhone, it was meant to be a placeholder until they found time (and money) to shoot an ‘official’ video.

So imagine Musgraves’ surprise when she found out that she was nominated not once, but twice (as both producer and artist) for Video Of The Year at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards.

“I actually made it with a friend in his kitchen one day,” she said. “The footage of me we just shot on an iPhone…we just went out to the backyard and filmed some stuff and put it together piece by piece.”

Musgraves added, “I had no idea that that would be the actual video and we just ran with it and people just ended up liking it. It’s a little different than you’re typical glamorized video or whatever and I think that’s kind of fun.”

Musgraves was shocked when she found out she was nominated for Video Of The Year, but also found it a little funny that her rinky-dink video was up against the likes of Taylor SwiftHunter HayesLittle Big TownEric Church and Zac Brown Band.

“I’m in a category with people who just spent hundreds and thousands of dollars on a video budget,” she said.  “I just think it’s kind of cool the way technology and the whole industry’s moving. You can do a lot of things for yourself…it was cool and fun that I had a hand in actually making it.”

Out of the four awards she is nominated for though, Musgraves admitted she’d be most excited to take home the statue for Female Vocalist of the Year. Pulling out a win would be no easy feat since she’s up against some pretty stiff competition: Taylor Swift, Martina McBrideCarrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, whose song“Mama’s Broken Heart” she cowrote.

But the young singer isn’t putting too much pressure on herself to win anything that night, seeing that it’s her very first time being nominated.

“I do think it’s cool that I’m in a category with a bunch of other females that have been around a long time and are just great vocalists and really well respected in our genre,” Musgraves said. “Female Vocalist would be cool, but I also want to have a career for a long time so if that one has to wait, I understand.”
