On her latest album, Same Trailer Different Park, Kacey Musgraves sets a new standard for country music. She just hopes the genre will be able to keep up.

Though Musgraves gives a few shouts out to all those trailer-park dwellers throughout her fourth album, she told Radio.com in an interview this week that there was no set theme when she first started. She just planned to write.

“I really just started trying to figure out what I wanted to say,” she explains. “And who I really am as a writer.”

The album wound up being a culmination of songs that Musgraves had been working on since she released her independent, self-titled album in 2007, back when she was just 17 years old. Though she was proud of the music she released back then, with Same Trailer, Musgraves wants to show that she’s done a lot of growing up since then.

“I had just graduated high school,” Musgraves explains about her 2007 album. “[Those were] the first songs I had ever written, and I felt like they might have been cool songs or catchy or whatever, [but] I’ve just grown so much as a person, musically, and personally since then.”

Since that time, Musgraves has moved away from home and had a few breakups, along with a few make-ups in-between. All of which have helped inspire her latest release. But it wasn’t until she met fellow songwriters like Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, who helped her co-write the album’s debut single “Merry Go ‘Round,” that she was able to fully express herself.

“I kind of found my stride,” she says. “Once I had ‘My House,’ which is kind of a trailer themed song…’Merry Go Round’ mentions trailers, I was kind of like, ‘I think this should kind of have this trailer park vibe.’ And then after that it was easy to run with.”

On her current tour with Kenny Chesney, Musgraves has even brought the theme into her stage look, setting up a big trailer with a bunch of pink flamingos hanging out in front.

Even though Musgraves makes good use of her small-town attitude throughout the album, she says it’s her song “Follow Your Arrow” that best represents who she is now. The song takes a page from Lady Gaga’s book to say that no matter what society dictates, there’s no shame in being who you are.

“It’s one that maybe six years ago I couldn’t have written,” Musgraves says of the song. “I had a different outlook then, but just growing and learning more about people and life, it just allowed me to write that.”

The song has gotten people talking for its chorus: “So, make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys. Or kiss lots of girls, if that’s something you’re into.”

Musgraves doesn’t mind all the chatter around the song, though. She in fact hopes those people just keep right on talking until the country community is forced to address the topic.

“I think it’s definitely time for those issues to be accepted in country music,” Musgraves explains. “I mean it’s 2013, and regardless of your political beliefs I think everybody should be able to love who they want to love and live how they want to live.”

She adds, “We’re all driven by the same emotions. We all want to be loved and feel the same things. Hopefully people will put aside their personal and political agendas and just agree with that fact.”

Same Trailer Different Park is in stores now. Kacey Musgraves is currently on the road as part of Kenny Chesney’s No Shoes Nation Tour. She was also nominated for several Academy of Country Music Awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year.
