Jason Aldean Changes Song Lyrics To Accomodate Beer Sponsorship

Any beer lover who’s lived in or even just passed through Texas has almost certainly encountered Shiner Bock, the tasty dark lager brewed by the Spoetzl Brewery in the town of, you guessed it, Shiner.

That list of beer lovers appears to include Jason Aldean, who featured a shout-out to Shiner Bock in his new single, “Take a Little Ride.”

Or, at least the song did include it. Jason’s label, Broken Bow Records, sent a note to radio stations this week, asking them to replace the ‘old’ version of “Take a Little Ride” with a new one that replaces the lyric “grab a little Shiner Bock” with “grab a couple Rocky Tops.”

Why the change? According to a statement from the Broken Bow promotions team, it’s because “”Jason Aldean is in the process of signing an endorsement deal with the Coors Brewing Company.”

Product placement, of course, isn’t anything new in music — or TV, film, or other media. Fords and Chevys make regular appearances in country songs (Chevy even appears in “Ride”), and Bud Light figured prominently in the lyrics of Lee Brice’s hit “A Woman Like You”–so much so that he eventually won a sponsorship from them.

Aside from some hardcore Shiner fans, most listeners will likely not be irked by the change–the spirit of the song remains the same, after all. Plus, the change actually removed a brand name from the lyrics rather than trying to squeeze one in.

“Take a Little Ride” itself has been taking off quickly–it topped the iTunes sales charts the week of its release, and this week it debuted at Number 19 on the Billboard Country Songs chart (Aldean’s highest song debut to date).

OK, now who’s feeling thirsty?
