Brantley Gilbert seems to be one of those country artists who can do no wrong. He’s already seen success as a songwriter for Jason Aldean (“Dirt Road Anthem,” “My Kinda Party”), and now his own singles are topping the charts.

Gilbert’s first hit, “Country Must Be Country Wide,” introduced him the world, and now his follow-up single, the ballad “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do,” seems headed straight for the top.

CBS Charlotte radio host Catherine Lane had a chance to talk to the rugged country star early this morning about the success of his new single and what the success means to him and his family.

And she also learned that Brantley has an accessory he loves so much, that sometimes he even showers with it.

“You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” currently sits at Number Three on the country charts, and the music video has topped at over a million views, but he doesn’t plan on stopping now. “It’s a great feeling, it makes you feel accomplished a little bit,” Gilbert said during the interview, about the success of the song.

“I wrote that song…she and I were together on and off for a long time, and when we were off I mean, we were off,” Brantley explained. “And we took a lot of crap from both sides, and people telling us, ‘Maybe you guys aren’t good for each other.’ The song is about hanging in there with her and trying to make it work.”

Then again, he admits, “Looking back, hindsight is 20/20, and I probably should have listened,” now that the two of them are broken up for good.

Life is all about learning lessons for Brantley, and none of his songs, he says, can be written without him having experienced them firsthand. Maybe, then, there will be a song about his occasional forgetfulness.

“Occasionally, this is no lie, I wear this [baseball hat] so much it’s like a body part. I got in the shower and didn’t even notice it was on until the water hit it.”

With over 20 baseball hats in his collection, there was no love lost with the new wet accessory. His favorite? A black cap with BHM on the back of it that he wears everywhere.
