George “Goober” Lindsey Dies at 83

George Lindsey got his fame from the role as Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show.  He died early morning on Sunday, May 6th from an illness.  He grew up in Alabama.  He started showing an interest in acting when he was a teenager.  Lindsey actually auditioned to be Gomer Pyle, but instead he got the role as Gomer’s cousin known as Goober.

He was a humanitarian as well.  He helped raise more than $1.7 million for the Alabama Special Olympics through the George Lindsey Celebrity Golf Tournament.
